Photograph by Ed Kashi, At 81 years old, family physician Dr. Arthur Coleman continues to serve the community in San Franciscos Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Dr. Coleman examines a bed-ridden patient. |
Ed Kashi, Dr. Ana Blohm is part of the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors Program in Manhattan, which serves over 1000 patients who have difficulty leaving their homes. A model program that bucks the current trends in health care, Blohm and her colleagues provide hands-on, high-quality medical care to men and women in their own homes. The patients include frail older adults, people with dementia, psychiatric illness, neuromuscular disease, cancer or diabetes, and those who are terminally ill. They range in age from their 20s to 105, and they might not be able to live at home independently without the Visiting Doctors program. Dr. Blohm visits Marla Wong, 86, a patient for two years, who has dementia and psychiatric issues. She checks her vitals and meds. |
